FAQ

Q: Fragrance Oils vs. Essential Oils
A: There is a big, ongoing debate about using Essential Oils over Fragrance Oils.  Essential Oils are derived from plants, and Fragrance Oils are manufactured scents.
At Classic Wicks, we have made the decision to use Fragrance Oils, to keep with our mission of supporting the American economy as best we can as well as staying environmentally conscious.  Many Essential Oils are not processed in the United States and can often times deplete some of our natural resources.

Q: Can the containers used by Classic Wicks be recycled or reused?
A: Yes!  Since Soy Wax can easily be cleaned up using soap and water, it allows us to easily reuse the containers for more candles or other purposes.

We would love to have a trade-in program, but we currently do not have a program that would allow us to cost-effectively have customers ship us their containers back.

There are plenty of other uses for the tins and glassware that we make our candles in.  The tins can be used for storing smaller items, like buttons, paperclips, etc.  They also make great teacher gifts when filled with small candies and tied with a nice ribbon!  The glassware can be used for small plants, and work especially well when used with bamboo - by adding some rocks and water.

Q: Cold Throw vs. Hot Throw
A: Cold Throw is the smell of the candle while not burning, and Hot Throw is the smell of the candle while it is burning.
The throw of each fragrance can be different. Some fragrances are meant to be more subtle and others are meant to be bolder.

Q: Using Soy Wax as a moisturizer, and what fragrances are body-safe.
A: Since Soy Wax is a natural resource, the wax can be used as a skin moisturizer when melted.  You must be very careful to use the melted soy wax from candles, since the wax can be hot enough to burn your skin and not all Fragrances are rated as body safe.  Please use your best judgment!

Q: Are your tins/jars really 6 oz candles?
A: Some other candle companies are using similar tins/jars to make their candles and are selling them as 8 oz candles.  The containers do hold 8 fluid ounces of liquid, but only hold about 6 ounces (weight) of candle wax.  We weigh each candle when it is poured, and have chosen to sell them as 6 oz candles.

Q: Why do I see soot on the container?
A: You may see a small amount of soot on the candle container for a few reasons.  Most commonly, the wick is too long or there is not enough wax left in the container.  Before burning your candle, we recommend that you trim the wick to ¼ inch.  We also do not recommend burning your candle when there is ¼ inch of wax or less left in the container.

Q: Some candle companies say their candles can burn for very long periods of time, is this accurate?
A: Soy wax can burn longer than other waxes, since it does not burn as hot as other waxes.  There are other factors to also consider.  Classic Wicks has chosen to use hemp wicks, which burn hotter, so this can decrease that calculated burn time for soy wax.  We chose the hemp wick because it burns better, leaving very little wax residue on the sides of the containers, and also provided a more fragrant burn.

Q: After burning the candle, why does the melted wax become darker than the rest of the candle as it cools?
A: We have found in our testing that some fragrances darken after they are burned.  Most fragrances do not do this, but some do.  There is nothing wrong with the candle or the fragrance, and we will try to note the possibility of this coloration change where possible.
